Makawao was having their 50th 4th of July parade and shut down the fastest way up the volcano, so Billy, our driver took a detour and abruptly stopped the car and told everyone to get out. He was doing a bonus \u201cpineapple field trip\u201d on the Dole Plantation. \u201cDon\u2019t worry about those no trespassing signs and private property signs. COME ON!!!\u201d He worked here as a teenager and gave us fascinating knowledge on just how they produce pineapples here on the island. At one time, there were 12000 acres of pineapples. No, just 800. Interesting fact, Maui is quickly becoming the next big hemp producer.
